To get notifications from a Facebook group, interestinsights needs to be added on that group.
As a group member, you can give this tutorial to the Facebook groups administrator.

Edit Group Settings

Open your Facebook group, click More and then Edit Group Settings.

Add Apps

Scroll down to the Apps section, and click Add Apps.

Search for interestinsights

In the popup, search for interestinsights and click on it.

Add interestinsights

Locate the blue Add button and click it.

interestinsights have now been added and you & your members can use it immediately.

Any third-party application needs to be added to a group to watch their content.

Yes. As long as the app is added to the group, it works, no matter if the group is public or private.
